June Mission Trip: The big news is that a group of six from St. Joseph Parish will be visiting Los Toros from June 3 to June 12. We will follow up on our ongoing projects: the beca (scholarship) program, the prenatal care program, the housing (hogares) program, help for the education of a deaf child, the after-school tutoring, and help for the clinics. We will witness the opening of the boxes of donated items we shipped down in February. And, of course we will carry down your donations of the healthcare items you have been dropping in the Los Toros bin in the Coat Room.
Please join us at the 4pm Mass on Saturday May 31to pray for us and ask God’s blessing for this work of Christian solidarity.
The Mission Grows: Los Toros is now a village of about 10,000 people and has become an example to follow for the other villages in “greater Los Toros.” One of those is Sajanoa where we have been helping the prenatal health promotores for a good number of years.
The people of Los Toros are becoming “missionaries” to the people of Sajanoa. They are working with leaders in Sajanoa to expand the prenatal care and help with additional health concerns. There is a high percentage of people with diabetes. Another need is basic healthy housing, starting with replacing dirt floors with cement. With the shortage of priests, they have Mass in Sajanoa only once a week on Thursday evenings. A teacher who is also a catechist leads a Communion Service every Sunday.
